Matthew Beem

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew has nearly two decades of experience in the financial sector, holding a wide array of positions throughout wealth management, investment advisory, and asset allocation strategies.  Before joining BlackTORO as CIO, he served as the country head for Uruguay at the EFG Bank Rep Offices in Montevideo and Punta del Este for two years. 

He began his career in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the think tank “Fundacion Mediterranea”, founded by the former Argentine finance minister Domingo Cavallo. During his two-year stint there, he covered the Brazilian economy, was on a team commissioned by the World Bank to compare the Brazilian devaluation of 1999 with the Argentine crisis of 2002, and wrote analysis of the Brazilian presidential transition of 2002 for both South American and US-based publications. Prior to joining EFG Oficina de Representacion, he was a senior member of the portfolio management team for EFG Asset Management in Miami, where he was the lead manager for three different discretionary strategies totaling an AuM of $ 700 million; 

Matthew was also an investment counselor for EFG Capital, where he advised clients on a non-discretionary basis.  He has also previously held several positions in Miami-based private banks, including Citi Private Bank, where he made asset allocation decisions for HNW portfolios. Matthew is fluent in Spanish and is a CFA charterholder (Chartered Financial Analyst). He holds a bachelor's degree from Trinity University, a master’s degree in International Studies from Stanford University, as well as a master's degree in Applied Meteorology from Mississippi State University, which helped him forge a unique interest in the weather and its impact on the economy and financial markets. In terms of organizational involvement, he has served as the president of the CFA Society Miami, is a current member of CFA Society Uruguay and CFA Society Miami, and has also served on boards of the CFA Institute, the Rotary Club, and as an alumni admissions interviewer for Stanford University.
